DESCRIPTION

Audio archive of journalist and author Paul Goldberg's 1985-1987 interviews with leading Soviet dissidents, including Jewish refuseniks and human rights activists, leading American journalists an dpoliticians who played a role in the work, or covered the founding of the Moscow Helsinki Watch Group, and leaders and activists of the Soviet Jewry movement in the US. The interviews were conducted in 1985-1987 when Goldberg was researching a book on the history of the Moscow Helsinki Group, "The Final Act: The Dramatic, Revealing Story of the Moscow Helsinki Watch Group," (New York: William Morrow, 1988). First hand accounts of 20 years of underground political and cultural activities beginning in the 1960s are discussed in interviews with Yuri Orlov, Alexander Ginzburg, Lyudmila Alexeyeva, Larisa Bogoraz, and Valentin Turchin. Interviews with leading American journalists and politicians include Robert Toth, George Krimsky, Peter Osnos, Irene Manekovsky, and Milicent Fenwick.
